Thousands took to the streets of India on Sunday in various parts of the country in demonstrations over the controversial citizenship law.
While some marched in opposition to the law, which critics say is an attack on the country’s secular constitution and minority Muslims, others walked in support of the legislation.
Outside Jamia Millia Islamia University, the site of violent clashes between police and anti-citizenship law demonstrators, performers dressed up as police and pretended to beat students. Others waved Indian flags and held placards with slogans such as “NRC Reject, CAA Resist.”
In Dehradun and Bhopal, supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party marched with flags to show their support, with one legislator from the party saying persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries will get Indian citizenship under the law.
