Coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States of America, the North American Manipur Tribal Association staged a protest near the White House against the ongoing violence in the Northeast Indian state.
The organisation’s leaders took turns to decry the violence that has resulted in over 100 deaths since May 3 when violence first broke out.
The demonstrators were also joined by US citizens and immigrants from other Indian states.
The NAMTA also dashed off two letters, one each to PM Modi and US President Joe Biden. In its letter to Modi, the tribal body demanded the declaration of the President’s Rule in Manipur, the formation of a Justice Committee to account for each victim, and finally, the establishment of a separate administration for Kuki and Zomi tribals in Manipur.
Writing to Biden, the NAMTA urged the US President to engage with Modi during the state visit on behalf of the United States. They also urged him to take cognizance of human rights violations in the state.
